Global Issue Project

The Sustainability of Dams

Author's Note

For my junior year global issue project I chose to take a closer look at the sustainability of dams. My research brought me to one specific case study about the Sardar Sarovar Dam located in India. Using Canva, I created an infographic aimed at educating people about some of the problems both this dam, and dams in general have in terms of human rights, and the environment. While unfortunately the reality is not so satisfying, the truth with dams is there is no clear good or bad way to implement them. My original goal was to compare two different dams, and to showcase their differences, but many dams have very similar positives and negatives. Many things are sacrificed for energy, money and control such as the safety of aquatic species and ecosystems, and this trade off is something I wrestled with during this project. When looking to the future of our planet, it is clear that finding sustainable energy solutions is a massive issue, but this project emphasized for me some of the dangers and problems this strategy creates.
